Enjoying art in Ibiza is possible thanks to its galleries, museums, and festivals,<\/strong> which demonstrate the attraction the island has held for artists since the early 20th century. If you too want to embrace its inspiring spirit, step away from the towel for a while and venture out to explore its more creative personality. On the White Island, the energy is felt not just on the beaches and in the clubs…<\/p>\n

Many artists, intellectuals, writers, and architects came to Ibiza on holiday and decided to settle there for a time or permanently. The philosopher Walter Benjamin, the artist Raoul Hausmann, the painters Laure\u00e0 Barrau, Wolfgang Schulze \u201cWols\u201d, and Will Faber, the journalist Paul Elliot, and the architects Erwin Broner and Walter Gropius are some of the notable figures who arrived in Ibiza with no return ticket in the first half of the 20th century, their suitcases filled with avant-garde influences, paving the way for the art scene in present-day Ibiza.<\/p>\n

An island with a long-standing presence in the national contemporary art scene<\/h2>\n

In the late 1950s, Ibiza captivated numerous European artists who found it to be a land beyond conventions and trends, unleashing their creativity. That melting pot of painters and sculptors, with diverse styles and backgrounds, crystallised into the Grupo Ibiza 59<\/strong>, a collective formed by the island-based artists Erwin Bechtold, Hans Laabs, Egon Neubauer, Heinz Tr\u00f6kes, Bob Munford, Erwin Broner, Bertil Sjoeberg, Katja Meiroswsky, and Antonio Ruiz. A few years later, local Ibizan artists followed suit with the Grupo Puget<\/strong>, which brought together Ferrer Guasch, Antonio Pomar, Vicent Calbet, and Mar\u00ed Ribas \u201cPortmany.”<\/p>\n

Works from both collectives can be seen at the Museum of Contemporary Art Ibiza<\/strong>, located in Dalt Vila. Inaugurated in 1969 , it is one of the oldest of its kind in Spain. Among its collections, the award-winning works from the Ibiza Biennial and the Ibizagr\u00e1fic Biennial stand out, along with the collection of drawings by Mar\u00ed Ribas \u201cPortmany\u201d and the very interesting collection of handmade posters from the 1970s from the now-defunct but historic Carl van der Voort gallery. An essential visit that cannot be missed from any art itinerary in Ibiza.<\/p>\n

The gallery scene on the White Island is dynamic, with established venues coexisting with newly arrived art spaces, some that endure for a limited time and others that have an added special character, such as La Nave Salinas, located on Ses Salines beach, or Casa Broner, an excellent example of rationalist architecture in Ibiza.<\/p>\n
